How refuelling works today - use of HVO at Health Supply AG

20 August 2025

In 2024, we launched Health Supply AG together with healthcare provider Galenica. Now we are taking this logistics ecosystem one step further. Since 1 July 2025, Health Supply AG has been offering transport services using the renewable fuel HVO. This significantly reduces the green-house gas emissions of motor vehicles. Based on the ‘book and claim’ principle, transport cus-tomers can book the use of HVO and offset it against their own carbon footprint.

::About Health Supply AG

Based in Villmergen, Health Supply AG is a joint venture between Planzer Transport AG and the lead-ing Swiss healthcare provider Galenica. Planzer holds 60% of the shares and Galenica 40%. Founded in 2024, the company specialises in efficient, safe and environmentally friendly delivery of goods to service providers such as pharmacies, doctors, hospitals and care homes. The transport services are temperature-controlled and comply with the Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines. However, Health Supply AG’s services are not only open to the two owner companies and their customers in the healthcare industry, but also to market players from all sectors.

New and renewable

HVO – trailblazing innovation in just three letters. The abbreviation stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil. This alternative fuel is produced from various sources such as vegetable oils and used cooking oils. When used in vehicles, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions many times over compared to conventional diesel. Since 1 July 2025, transport customers at Health Supply AG have been able to use transport services powered by HVO, the sustainable fuel alternative. Sustainable and environmentally friendly transport solutions are consciously and purposefully promoted in the joint venture with Galenica.

Lower CO2 emissions without the need for conversions

HVO is used as a full replacement for fossil-fuel diesel in trucks. It does not require engine modifications, nor does it shorten the maintenance intervals. Considerably less carbon dioxide and other pollutants are produced when HVO fuel is burned. By using 100-percent HVO, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels. What’s particularly good about this is that almost all truck manufacturers have approved their models for HVO.

«By using HVO, we are combining the ecosystem expertise of Health Supply AG with the sustainability standards of the family-owned company Planzer and Galenica to promote greener supply chains in Switzerland.»

Stefan Röösli, CEO of Health Supply AG

Book and claim

Companies that are actively working to reduce their environmental footprint can purchase HVO from Health Supply AG based on the ‘book and claim’ principle. This concept separates the sustainability certification of the physical product from their own supply chain. This allows companies to record the reduction in emissions, with the corresponding measures – in this case the use of HVO in transport – being implemented by the contracted logistics service provider (Planzer or Galenica’s own fleet). Customers therefore purchase the use of HVO from Health Supply AG and are able to offset this commitment against their own supply chain emissions.

Planzer goes HVO

Planzer has long been familiar with HVO. In 2023, we commissioned an HVO fuel pump in Bachenbülach as part of a pilot project. At that time, eight heavy Planzer motor vehicles were running on HVO R100, with an annual consumption of more than 75,000 litres of HVO. We have been investing heavily in HVO since mid-2024.  In the future, alternative fuels will play a crucial role in our sustainability efforts as far as our fleets are concerned.

Sustainability checked twice over

In Switzerland, HVO is produced exclusively from biogenic residues and waste materials and meets the strictest sustainability criteria. We currently use HVO R32 in our vehicles. This is a blend of biodiesel and fossil-fuel diesel. It fully complies with the European standard for diesel fuel EN 590. We purchase our HVO diesel from a Swiss fuel distributor. It is certified in accordance with the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) system and has been verified a second time by renowned engineering firm EBP Schweiz. We issue our customers a certificate confirming the reduced CO2 emissions.

Adding opportunities, multiplying impact

At Planzer, we have been working with alternative fuels and drive technologies for several years. Our sustainability strategy includes promoting the use of renewable and sustainable fuels such as HVO. In doing so, we are guided by the principle of openness to technology. This means, for example, that we use HVO in addition to electric drive technologies such as electric trucks and electric delivery vans. Ultimately, our efforts are intended to reduce the overall environmental footprint of the entire Planzer Group for the benefit of the environment and people.
