Energy efficiency of buildings: power for the environment

26 March 2024

Since 2015, we have saved 2040 tons of CO2, 5603 megawatt hours per year, or as much electricity as 1000 households use annually, through targeted efficiency programmes at our major consumer sites. But that’s not all by any means: we are now expanding this efficiency drive to a further 21 properties at 14 Planzer sites.

::About EnAW (Energy Agency of the Economy)

For over 20 years, EnAW has cooperated with companies to develop and implement economically viable climate protection measures. It offers customised solutions to continuously increase energy and resource efficiency. With over 100 experts, EnAW supports companies from all branches and sectors of the economy on their way to reducing CO2 emissions and costs, as well as increasing energy and resource efficiency.

A powerful lever for people and the environment

The first thing most people mention when it comes to logistics companies like ours is fuel consumption. However, our buildings make just as much of a contribution to climate protection as the rest of our business. That’s why we are a member of the Energie-Agentur der Wirtschaft (Energy Agency for the Economy – EnAW). In close cooperation with EnAW and the federal government, we are pursuing ambitious targets for energy consumption reduction and CO2 emissions at our major consumer sites. That’s the term used to describe operating sites with an annual consumption in excess of 500 megawatt hours of electricity. We have been implementing targeted measures to reduce energy consumption at 15 of our major consumer sites for almost 10 years as part of the ‘Energy Management for Large Consumers’ project.

Numbers speak volumes

We have saved 2040 tons of CO2 – or an average of 6% of CO2 emissions per year – since 2015. In addition, we used 5,603 megawatt hours less electricity across all 15 sites year on year. This corresponds to an increase in efficiency of 13%, equal to the annual electricity requirement of 1000 Swiss households. This achievement is reason enough for us to plan and implement similar efficiency measures for 21 additional Planzer Group properties.

These include (since 2015)

  1. Bachenbülach
  2. Birsfelden
  3. Dietikon
  4. Domat/Ems

  10. Venoge Parc
  11. Villmergen
  12. Wädenswil
  13. Wikon
  14. Märstetten
  15. Altstetten

14 new sites with 21 properties will be added to this list, starting in 2024:

  1. Balerna
  2. Chavornay
  3. Conthey
  4. Dällikon
  5. Dintikon
  6. Kallnach

Putting sites through their paces

After inspecting each site, we define suitable efficiency measures for the building envelope, heating, ventilation, cooling units, hot water and electrical installations. We calculate the savings potential and estimate the costs of energy optimisation. At the same time, we attach great importance to ensuring that the proposed measures make sense not only ecologically but also financially. This results in a list of targeted measures for each site that takes both ecological and financial aspects into account.

Powered by collaborative expertise

We will continue to implement these site-specific initiatives in the coming years. Experts from EnAW and the engineering firm Lemon Consult AG support us in our planning, implementation and monitoring to ensure that the measures work in practice. We also raise awareness and train our technical staff on energy-related topics. We want to play our part in achieving Switzerland’s ambitious 2050 climate goals using our concentrated sustainability expertise, intelligent digital tools and the resolute action that characterises us as a logistics company.

‘The more we do to make our buildings more efficient, the more it helps the environment, our profitability and our customers – and in general all those who work with and for us.’

Martina Novak, Head of Sustainability, Planzer

Focused on our goal right from the start

As a transport and logistics company, energy and resource efficiency are daily concerns for us. After all, we use energy sources and resources to provide system-critical services. As a family business, it is also particularly important to us to continually reduce the ecological footprint of our business activities. That’s because we want to continue supplying people in Switzerland and neighbouring countries with goods in the future.
